Cell Phones

Having a working U.S. cell phone number is an important step in preparing for your studies at SRJC. You will need a phone number for things like contacting your housing, setting up a bank account, receiving SRJC emergency alerts, and staying in touch with friends and family. Most international students find it easiest to bring an unlocked phone from home and purchase a prepaid SIM card when they arrive in Santa Rosa.

Making Sure Your Phone Works

Before you travel, check with your current provider to confirm that your phone is unlocked. An unlocked phone can accept SIM cards from any company. Most international devices will work in the U.S. if they support GSM networks, which are standard here. If your phone is locked or incompatible, you may need to purchase a new device after arrival.

SIM Cards and eSIMs

U.S. carriers offer two types of SIM options:

  • Physical SIM: A small chip that you insert into your phone. This is the most common option and works with almost all devices.
  • eSIM: A digital SIM that is activated through an app or QR code. This option is available on many newer phones and does not require a store visit.

Both options give you a U.S. phone number and mobile data service.

Where to Get a SIM Card

Students have several options for getting connected:

  • In-person: Electronics stores like Best Buy or Target, as well as mobile carrier stores, can provide SIM cards and help you set up service right away.
  • Online: Many companies allow you to order a SIM card or activate an eSIM through their websites or mobile apps, either before or after you arrive in the U.S.
  • Airports: Some major airports have kiosks that sell prepaid SIM cards for international travelers.

Choosing a Phone Plan

Phone plans in the U.S. vary by cost and features. As an international student, you will likely find prepaid plans to be the most convenient. Prepaid plans allow you to pay in advance and do not require a long-term contract or a U.S. credit history.

For students who use a lot of data or make frequent international calls, higher-cost plans with unlimited features may be a better fit. Others may prefer lower-cost prepaid plans with basic talk, text, and data. Prices can range from around $15 per month for basic service to $50 or more per month for unlimited nationwide coverage.

Tips for Students

  • Use Wi-Fi on campus and in housing whenever possible to reduce data usage.
  • Consider using free calling apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, or LINE to stay in touch with family and friends abroad.
  • Keep your SIM card packaging and account information in case you need to adjust your plan or transfer service later.
